COMMISSIONS
Commission an original painting shaped by fluid movement, layered color, and shifting depth.
Brooklyn-based artist Julian Weiss welcomes commission inquiries from collectors, art consultants, and design professionals. Each project begins with a conversation about scale, color, and the setting for the work, while remaining grounded in his approach to abstract painting.
A painting developed in conversation with your space
Julian works primarily with fluid acrylic on canvas, building compositions through pouring, dilution, layering, and dispersed pigment. Dense passages meet translucent areas, creating a sense of movement within the painted surface.
A commission offers an opportunity to consider these relationships at a particular scale and within a specific setting. The conversation may begin with a painting from the gallery, a group of colors, or the proportions and atmosphere of a room.
The resulting work retains the movement and unpredictability of Julian’s process. Existing paintings can provide a starting point, but each commission develops as its own composition.
How a commission begins
1. Share your project
Send a brief description of what you have in mind. Approximate dimensions, photographs of the space, a budget range, and any relevant dates are helpful. You can also reference paintings from the gallery.
2. Discuss the direction
Julian reviews the inquiry to determine whether the project fits his practice and availability. The conversation considers scale, palette, placement, and the qualities of the work that interest you.
3. Confirm the details
Before work begins, the scope, price, estimated schedule, and delivery arrangements are agreed in writing.
For art consultants and design professionals
For residential, hospitality, and other design projects, include the proposed placement, approximate dimensions, project schedule, and any installation requirements with your inquiry.
Commission discussions focus on how an original painting can relate to the setting while preserving the layered color, fluid movement, and material character of Julian’s work.

Commission questions
Can I request particular colors or dimensions?
Include your preferred colors and approximate dimensions in your inquiry. These provide a starting point for discussing what is possible within Julian’s materials and painting process.
Can I commission something similar to a painting in the gallery?
You are welcome to reference existing paintings and describe what interests you about them. Color relationships, movement, density, and composition can inform the discussion. Because fluid acrylic introduces variation, a new painting will have its own forms and surface qualities.
Do I need a fully developed brief?
No. A description of the space and a few references are enough to begin the conversation. If dimensions, budget, or timing are still being considered, note that in your inquiry.
How much does a commission cost?
Pricing is discussed in relation to the proposed dimensions, materials, and scope. Share a budget range if you have one so it can be considered early in the conversation.
How far in advance should I inquire?
Include your preferred completion or installation date when you contact Julian. Availability and the estimated schedule will be discussed before a project is confirmed.
